Dos

Dress smartly, look bright and attentive, speak clearly and confidently. Your presentation is as important as what you have to say.
Find out where the interview will be held and plan a route beforehand so you know how long it will take to arrive. Plan for any eventualities.
Examine the person specification or job specification and consider in advance some questions you may be asked.
Consider your social media profile – savvy employers will check the social media profiles of prospective employees so make sure there isn’t anything controversial on there.
Arrive in plenty of time and be nice to everyone you meet from the receptionist onwards – you never know who might have a say in your appointment.
Deliver a professional handshake accompanied by a gracious smile and confident body language when you meet the interviewer.
Take your time when answering questions. Make sure you understand the question and don’t worry about taking a couple of seconds to think about your answer.
Quote real examples to highlight your strengths and achievements.
Sell yourself – be positive about both yourself and your experience.
Make the most of your research – mention some of the facts you have gleaned from their website or if you’ve seen them in the media, etc.
Make sure you talk to everyone if it is a panel interview rather than directing your answers towards just one or two people.
Find out as much as you can about the job – prepare some questions to ask at the end of the interview.

Be late – arrive 10 to 15 minutes early, you never know how long it will take you to get from your car through security to reception.
Swear or use slang words.
Slouch in your seat or have bad posture. Always look attentive.
Lie or embellish the truth.
Criticise current or previous employers.
Answer a question with another question.
Read from your CV – you should know your own career history.
Interrupt the interviewers, although they may interrupt you.
Assume you have got the job or be arrogant in your behaviour.
Leave without finding out what the next steps are. Ask what the next interview stage entails and when you will hear feedback.
